Not much is accurately known about St. Valentine aside from his execution on February 14, 273 North of Rome, Italy. The Legend is that while Bishop Valentine was jailed, his prayers healed the jailer’s blind daughter. On the day of his execution he left a note to her signed “Your Valentine”. Another popular legend is that he secretly married Christian couples to prevent husbands from being drafted to war, a defiance to Emperor Claudius’ orders.

St. Valentine’s Day became a Christian holiday to honor his sainthood and replace the pagan February holiday of Lupercalia. It has evolved to a worldwide holiday that honors love of all kinds. In the Czech Republic, Valentines’ Day is relatively new, as it was unheard of before the fall of communism in 1989. May 1st remains the traditional day for couples, however the sales of St. Valentine’s Gifts have steadily increased over time.
